Rose Valland died in 1980 at the age of 82 years old in Ris, a city near Paris. Rose Valland wrote a book on her experiences during the war called, Le Front de L’Art, which led to the 1964 film, The Train. She received the Legion of Honor, the Medal of the Résistance, and was awarded Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government for her heroic and clever doings. The United States awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1948, and she then received the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany as well.
Rose was one of the most honorable women in France. During her lifetime no one really knew all of the accomplishments that she had achieved and she went unnoticed throughout her lifetime by many people because people didn't think that art was as important than as the war itself, and they didn't pay attention to really anyone in the Monuments Men. People were memorized by the actions that the Nazis did against the Jews. When she died, she was buried in her home town of Saint Etienne de Saint Geoirs.
In memory of Rose Valland and the Monuments Men, and all of their contributions, the 2014 movie, called "Monuments Men" was directed by George Clooney. Valland's role in preserving the stolen art was discussed in the book and documentary, The Rape of Europa. Rose let art to live on, and with the help of the Monuments Men she saved the culture of France from being lost and forgotten. Rose's legacy was to allow culture to live forever.
